3-d Stage of the Project – Modular Housing Hackathon

As a result of natural disasters and conflicts, countless people are displaced and in need of immediate, flexible and sustainable shelter solutions. “Reconstruction of Ukraine: Modular Housing Hackathon” aims to address this urgent problem by bringing together a diverse group of professionals, including designers, architects, engineers, citizens, business people, urban planners and policy makers.

During the hackathon, participants will develop tangible concepts and solutions, focusing on concrete proposals that include the use of flexible modular housing.

    Start: 11 April 2024
  • check-circle
    Duration: 3 days
  • Challenge Overview:

More about the context: According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the global displacement crisis has reached unprecedented proportions, with more than 79.5 million people displaced worldwide. This staggering figure underscores the urgent need for effective emergency shelter solutions.

Traditionally, emergency shelter has been temporary structures, often made from improvised materials such as tents and tarps. While these options provide an immediate improvement, the durability and reliability of such solutions are quite limited. Factors such as extreme weather, pest infestation, and general wear and tear call into question the reliability of short-term shelter, and pose challenges in designing robust emergency shelter.

  • Solution examples:

      1. Develop modular housing units that are easily assembled, disassembled, and transported to accommodate different site conditions and community needs.
      2. Explore modular designs that can be adapted for various family sizes and demographics.
      3. Utilise sustainable and durable materials to ensure longevity and resist harsh environmental conditions.
      4. Explore the integration of emerging technologies such as 3D printing, robotics, and automation in the construction process to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
      5. Incorporate renewable energy sources (solar panels, wind turbines), sanitation and water purification and energy-efficient technologies to create resilient housing solutions.
The prize pool for the hackathon is 5000 euros, which will be shared between the three winning teams. The best concepts will receive additional support for further development, with an opportunity to present results to a global audience during the final event.
